CNN’s Headline News Had A Live Interview With CTE Director Mac Beaton

On Friday, Feb, 22nd 2019, CNN’s Headline News had a live interview, via Skype, with CTE Director Mac Beaton about CTE’s Letter of Intent Signing Day.

In this great episode we interview Carter Iseman, Director of Training and Development for Virginia Asphalt Association, David Helmick, Executive Vice President of Superior Paving, and Sunni Burton, QC Lab Technician for Superior Paving. They talk about their work in the asphalt industry and what they are actively doing to attract young people to their industry and more. Students in the A/C, Refrigeration and Plumbing class are working with Greenhouse to put together planters made from discarded pallets. A/C classes put them together and Greenhouse grows/adds the plants. These will be sold to raise money for class activities/competition.

The ‘Deep Space’ Chesapeake-Richmond VA District Competition for FIRST Robotics was held this weekend at Deep Run High School. Tucker’s team 384 SPARKY battled it out and ended up as a finalist in the competition. During the awards ceremony 384 SPARKY received the 2019 Excellence in Engineering Award. The team has been truly committed to excellence this year, and couldn’t have made it this far without the hard work of the students and support from the advisor and parents and guardians. Congratulations to team 384 SPARKY on a successful event!

SkillsUSA District Competition – February 23rd 2019Students enrolled in Trade and Industry programs through the Academy at Virginia Randolph, and the ACE Centers at Hermitage and Highland Springs were busy demonstrating all the great things they’ve learned through the SkillsUSA District event! The regional competition was held on February 23rd at Henrico’s Hermitage ACE Center. In addition, throughout February, several District competitions were held at various locations throughout the region. Students enrolled in Henrico’s programs competed in a wide-array of areas including: automotive, barbering, carpentry, cosmetology, customer service, diesel, electricity, esthetics, job interviewing, masonry and welding. Students also competed in static displays such as occupational displays, poster display, promotional board and flyers, and scrapbooking. We are all very proud of the great job by the students, and appreciate the time end effort made by the teachers to prepare them! Henrico students placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in many of the events - congratulations on a job well done! Students will have the opportunity to compete at the state level to compete the weekend of April 12th at Virginia Beach.

Godwin Eagles Soar in FIRST ROBOTICS Richmond Competition The ‘Deep Space’ Chesapeake-Richmond VA District Competition for FIRST Robotics was held this weekend at Deep Run High School. Godwin’s team TALON 540 was selected to be a part of the 2nd seeded alliance as the 27th ranked team and was eliminated by the 3rd seeded alliance after three matches in the semi-finals. During the awards ceremony TALON 540 received the 2019 Industrial Design Award, which recognizes teams that build efficient and effective mechanisms that answer the game's challenge. This is truly a testament to the amazing students, advisors and volunteers that work together on a weekly basis. Congratulations to TALON 540 on a successful event!

In 2018 Henrico CTE held our first Letter of Intent Signing Day where we celebrated students who were going to the world of work after high school with an event that very much resembled a signing event for college athletes. We had a large table with students and businesses, and they signed agreements that included start dates, pay and benefits for the students. It was a great event and afterward when we started posting to social media about the event things got interesting. Mac Beaton, director of Career & Technical Education with Henrico County Schools, knew he had a great idea about celebrating students going to work but what happened a few days later after the event still has us excited almost a year later. Social Media activity was very active right from the start but when a celebrity, Mike Rowe from the show “Dirty Jobs”, decided to give us his praise on his Facebook page we could have never imagined were his comments would take us. What followed was new stories from all over the country and Mac being interviewed by the likes of the Today Show, Fox News and more. Even 10 months later, Mac had a live interview on CNN’s Headline News about Signing Day.
