Tech for Troops provides technology training and refurbished computers for our troops and they made a monetary donation to our Godwin High School Robotics Team! Thank you Tech for Troops!
Henrico CTE had our first career rodeo and it was awesome! We had over 400 students and over 100 businesses coming to judge and talk with those students as they showed off their career skills! We have video. LOL.

Glen Allen High School and Godwin High School marketing students participated in River City Consulting’s Battle of the Ads. Battle of the Ads is an event designed to give students real-world experience in marketing and advertising. The students were given 4-6 weeks to design a marketing plan for River City Consulting. The winner will have they’re commercial played on CBS 6. 01/10/2020
The Financial Literacy Live event, a 60-75 minute program, is presented by The Reminders, a hip hop duo. Using the power of a live music performance and their own personal stories, they inspire young people to take control of their financial future. The Reminders discuss college planning, athletic and academic scholarships, investing and 529 plans, entrepreneurship, S.M.A.R.T. Goals, dealing with negative emotions that hinder success, credit scores and debunking the hype of overnight success as an athlete or musician. 01/10/2020
Kim Thompson is the fashion marking, sports marketing, and digital social media marketing teacher at Varina High School and is this month’s Teacher Spotlight.
Henrico CTE students from Highland Springs, Deep Run, Glen Allen, Hermitage, Godwin, and Freeman High Schools designed and constructed over 200 toys to donate to the Henrico Christmas Mother.
Skilled Trades professionals from James River Exterior visited ACE Center students at the House Building Project. They taught the students how to install fascia boards, rake boards, & soffits.

Brookland Middle Schools held their first cupcake war. Students made their cupcakes from scratch and they were judged on taste, appearance, originality, their table display and more.

Henrico CTE Signing Day honors students moving into the world of work after high school. We had 110 students start their career with over 60 businesses at the signing event. All great paying with advancement and benefits. Every school should honor students moving to the world of work after high school. School is about options and in many cases going to work and maybe starting college later should be accepted as a legitimate option for a young person. In many cases an employer will pay or help pay for college so that a young person does not start their adulthood with debt.

Tim Alvut is January’s Teacher Spotlight. He is the teacher for the STEM and Precision Machining class. He introduces students to the world of STEM through activities using machining technology. Students learn to lay out and produce projects using a variety of industry standard tools and equipment.

Business students in Mr. Jackson’s “Make It Your Business” course at Short Pump MS created a Cardboard Arcade to display their Workplace Readiness Skills and Entrepreneurship skills! Their classmates throughout the building will come and play in the arcade to earn prizes; the student-entrepreneurs will demonstrate outstanding listening, speaking, integrity, and customer service skills to each “customer” who visits their game. Our “Letter of Intent Signing Day” brought together students, parents, county officials and the press to show our students how important it is to enter the workforce and start their careers. CS for ES (Computer Science for Elementary Students) is a collaborative, interactive outreach event hosted by HCPS middle school business education teachers and their students. The goal of CS for ES is to introduce fourth and fifth grade students to computer science through a brief educational presentation followed by tactile interaction with computer science tools such as spheros, coding and unplugged CS activities. Alpha Dog Club provided scholarships for 25 of my Vet 2 students to become certified in Pet First Aid. This is a state-recognized certification from the Office of the Virginia State Veterinarian and the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services. All 25 became certified this evening. Maya Jordan attended the Jobs for Virginia Graduates board meeting. Maya Jordan was a former student at the Academy at Virginia Randolph. Maya graduated from AVR in 2012 and Virginia Union University in 2016. While at AVR she was a business student and participated in JVG (President for 2 years), SkillsUSA (District winner and competed at state competition), and SCA. She is currently working 2 jobs and preparing to take the LSAT in December. She will hopefully be attending law school in the fall of 2018. Maya spoke to the JVG board about her experiences at AVR and how we prepared her for college and the world beyond. Henrico County Public School Students participate in the Teen Summer Fire Academy (TSFA). The TSFA is designed to offer a chance for the area’s rising high-school freshmen to experience the culture of the Henrico County Fire Department. Instruction places an emphasis on teamwork, fire suppression skills, core values, understanding the mission of the Henrico County Division of Fire, physical fitness, and socialization through meals and team-building opportunities.
